This paper presents a snapshot of ongoing work towards a prototype implementation of new 8-bit math font encodings for (La)TeX, based on the ‘Aston’ proposal presented at the TUG ’93 conference. The design goals and technical considerations that have led to the present font table layouts are summarized and the contents and organization of the individual encodings are presented in detail. Finally, some alternative approaches and some remaining open problems are discussed.
