, , , Elsevier 1976. a) In the Bay of Biscay the oblique opening changed to pure strike slip along the North Pyrenean fault. Similarly, the oblique opening of the Alboreau sea progressively changed to pure strike slip across the straits of Gibraltar. Apparently, in general, triangular opening are not "scissor"-like openings resulting in compression on the other side, but are oblique openings ending in strike-slip faulting at the summit of the triangle. This could be called the "law of Straits" ! (p. 102)., , , Elsevier 1976. b) It is well known, too, that volcanic activity may occur well away from the plate margin. However, the main problem is to explain why some activity persists typically to 30 km or more away from the plate boundary in slow-spreading ridges to produce the topography of the rift valley and its adjacent rift mountains, whereas little tectonic activity exists away from the boundary on fast-spreading ridges.
